Awards involving clinical training in Medicine and Dentistry
Commonwealth Scholarships are awarded in all academic disciplines including medicine, dentistry and allied sciences; while they are primarily for formal postgraduate study in preparation for university degrees or diplomas (e.g. MSc, PhD, DPH), in medicine and dentistry they may be awarded for 6 months of clinical training.
Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowships are primarily intended for established teachers who require a programme of study in depth to enhance their teaching and/or research experience or, in the case of medicine and dentistry, clinical skills relevant to the academic plans of the nominating institution. The award is tenable for 6 months.
From 1 October 2010, all international medical graduates, including those on Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships, who apply for registration with the GMC will be required to score 7.0 or above in every band of the academic IELTS test.
Applicants in medicine and dentistry whose programme requires them to practise clinically, or to work in a laboratory department reporting on samples from patients, can be considered only if they are eligible for registration with the General Medical Council or the General Dental Council.
