Awards involving clinical training in Medicine and Dentistry

Commonwealth Scholarships are awarded in all academic disciplines including medicine, dentistry and allied sciences; while they are primarily for formal postgraduate study in preparation for university degrees or diplomas (e.g. MSc, PhD, DPH), in medicine and dentistry they may be awarded for 6 months of clinical training.

Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowships are primarily intended for established teachers who require a programme of study in depth to enhance their teaching and/or research experience or, in the case of medicine and dentistry, clinical skills relevant to the academic plans of the nominating institution. The award is tenable for 6 months.

Applicants in medicine and dentistry whose programme requires them to practise clinically, or to work in a laboratory department reporting on samples from patients, can be considered only if they are eligible for registration with the General Medical Council or the General Dental Council. Candidates requiring registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and whose primary medical qualification is recognised only for limited registration with the GMC will be required to show competence in the English Language by reaching a satisfactory standard in the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) test. However, those who have previously held registration with the GMC to practise in the United Kingdom may not be required by the GMC to take the IELTS test.
