General Information

Since 2002, the Commission has offered Scholarships by distance learning as part of the commitment of the Commission and the Department for International Development’s (DFID) commitment to explore new methods of scholarship delivery.

Rather than offering its Distance Learning Scholarships directly to students, the Commission works with UK institutions and has to date funded courses at over 20 UK institutions, awarding over 1,000 scholarships to students from across the Commonwealth.  The Scholarships cover the overseas tuition fees at the Masters degree level.

We have awarded Scholarships to institutions using a variety of distance learning modes and the Commission will accept bids from institutions interested in the methods of delivery listed below:

Partnership delivery
These courses are offered in partnership with institutions in developing Commonwealth countries and chosen on the grounds of their impact on international development. The awards are used to improve the long-term capacity of institutions, as well as the individual recipients. The ninth 'cohort' of these awards will be taken up in 2010/11 and the Commission currently offers around 15 scholarships per course.

Non-partnership
Since 2006, our distance learning programme has extended support to the direct delivery of distance learning courses (ie where there is no overseas partner institution directly involved in the programme). Fifteen courses have thus far been supported.

Health and Education in Africa
In 2006 the Commission was awarded a tranche of funding by DFID to support up to 200 distance learning courses tenable in Sub-Saharan Africa and specifically for courses in health and education. These awards were funded by a discrete tranche of £1.8 million.  The present tranche has enabled funding for 11 courses at 8 institutions with up to 30 awards on offer per course.

This section currently applies to the UK institutions who were invited in January 2010 to submit candidates to the Commission's selection committee.  Applications in 2010 must be made via our electonic application system (EAS).- Please note that the Nominating organisation in the UK should complete their section of the application form first before instructing any candidates they are nominating to complete their section of the form.

Nominators should read the following Nominator's Guide to using the EAS before starting their application.

Candidates should read the following Distance Learning Guide to using the EAS before starting their application.

Please access our electronic application system to make an application.

Any queries about using the EAS should be directed to: eas@cscuk.org.uk

The closing date for applications from nominating organisations to reach the Commission is 14 June 2010.  Applications should be submitted using the online system but a covering letter giving names of candidates should be sent separately to the following address so as to arrive by 14 June:

Information for UK academic institutions
The Commission sends out an invitation every June to all UK institutions inviting them to submit Expressions of Interest (EI) for courses offered either directly or in partnership with an overseas institution.

The Commission expects all Expressions to be submitted with the approval of an institution and therefore they should be submitted through the Executive Head in the first instance. A copy of the 2010 EI form will be made available on this page in June; it is for the use of UK institutions only and should be completed with reference to the scheme's Prospectus which sets out eligibility criteria etc.  An electronic version of the 2010 Prospectus will be available on this site in due course.

The Commission's Distance Learning committee considers all eligible Expressions at a meeting held every October. Successful UK course providers are then invited to submit a formal bid for support and these are considered at a meeting held in January each year; it is then that the committee decides on the number of Scholarships to be allocated to a particular course. Thereafter, UK institutions will conduct their own recruitment exercises; these normally include announcements  placed in the media and on their own websites.
