The Commission is a non-departmental public body in its own right, and seeks to conform to all relevant guidelines on good practice. As a public body, the Commission is required to disclose various details about the nature of its work. These include the following:
By Act of Parliament, the Commission comprises up to fourteen members and a Chair, who are appointed by the Secretary of State for International Development.
Members of the Commission are required to declare any interest or appointment that might influence their judgement on decisions in which they participate. Examples include appointments in any university, or other organisation that receives awards from the Commission, or positions in any organisation that undertakes work on the Commission's behalf. The Register of Interests is held by the Commission secretariat, and is open to public inspection free of charge. All positions on the Commission are part-time. The only member of the Commission to receive payment is the Chair, who is paid an honorarium of £6000 per annum. Other members of the Commission receive travel and other out of pocket expenses only (Commission travel policy). Members of the Commission who review applications and attend selection committee meetings also receive an honorarium of £250 per meeting.
